Statewide Discussion:

Skiatook Fire Department requested aerial firefighting support with Oklahoma Forestry Services dispatching one National Guard Blackhawk to assist with a large fire in Osage County yesterday afternoon. The size of the fire was initially reported at 300 acres, but later updated to approximately 3,000 acres yesterday evening. The Bureau of Indian Affairs and multiple mutual-aid fire departments assisted with fire suppression into the evening. No further updates were received on this fire overnight.

The highest fire danger today will lie along and west of a line from Alfalfa County to Cotton County as a dry line will push low relative humidity, warm temperatures and gusty winds into Oklahoma. Temperatures in this area will top out in the upper 70°’s to low 80°’s with low relative humidity readings around 30%. Winds will shift clockwise through the day from SSE this morning to NNW this afternoon and evening. Wind speeds will gradually increase through the day to 14-19 mph with potential for gusty periods this afternoon. This evening a wind advisory is in place with potential for strong north winds at 30-40 mph gusting to near 60 mph overnight. The strongest winds will occur around sunset. Fires occurring in this area that escape initial attack will be prone to wind-driven fire behavior in dry, dormant fuels. Storm chances enter this afternoon which may prompt erratic fire behavior if present in the area of a going fire and fires burning as the front approaches will likely exhibit extreme rates of spread.

Fire danger in the remainder of Oklahoma today should be moderated by elevated relative humidity and increasing sky cover associated with forecast storm chances. However, dormant fuels in the area have experienced two drying days (except in southeastern Oklahoma) and may burn vigorously.

Special Note to Public: Outdoor burning including debris burning, prescribed fire and controlled burning is strongly discouraged today due to a wind advisory that is in place and the potential for strong, gusty north winds late this afternoon and overnight reaching 30-40 mph with gusts near 60mph. Any outdoor burning that has occurred in the past few days should be checked to insure that it is dead out as the wind may loft embers into dry and dormant grass and leaf litter resulting in the potential for a quick growing wildfire.

Remember… ONLY YOU can prevent wildfires! Enjoy Oklahoma’s wildlands responsibly.

Report any suspicious wildland fire activity on the Arson Tip Line: 1-866-662-7766 (1-866-NO ARSON).
