Statewide Discussion:

Limited fire danger through the day today with highest fire danger indices in the southwestern quadrant of Oklahoma ahead of a cold front that holds promise of widespread precipitation along with much cooler temperatures. Given the current forecast information, fire danger concerns are expected to be largely mitigated through the first part of next week.

Today: Relative humidity values in the west will tap 25% in several locations with 21% observations in some southwestern locations as temperatures warm into the mid- to upper-70’s. In southwestern Oklahoma fine-dead fuel moisture values of 5%-6% with some 4% observations possible will yield receptive fuels. Southwest winds ahead of the frontal boundary at 10-15 mph with some gusts in excess of 20 mph will support potential for head fire rates of spread 130-140 ft./min. with flame lengths 9-11 ft. in grass dominated fuels. The Panhandle and northwestern counties will also see temperatures warm into the mid-60’s to low-70’s with afternoon relative humidity values around 25%. Moderate rates of fire spread are expected should any new fire become established. Winds will shift to the northwest this morning tipping to the northeast this afternoon with improving fuel moisture values as sky cover increases.

Provided the current forecast holds, the next update to the Oklahoma Wildfire Situation Report will be issued early next week.
