Statewide Discussion:

The cold front moving across Oklahoma this morning will drive stout north winds 25-35 mph with gusts in excess of 45 mph in many locations. Cold temperatures, elevated relative humidity and potential for mixed precipitation will limit probability of ignition in much of the state. However, any fire that would have opportunity to become established in dry, continuous fuels may prove challenging to contain.

Scattered precipitation will limit fire danger locally; however areas in southwest Oklahoma where no precipitation is realized will likely remain in elevated fire danger through the afternoon. Falling temperatures and relative humidity values in the 30%’s will hold fine fuel moisture well above critical values, but wind speeds today could drive very rapid rates of fire spread on any fire that becomes established in dry, dormant fuels. Again, while the probability of ignition will be low today, any fire that does ignite may prove challenging to suppress due to wind driven fire behavior.
