Statewide Discussion:

Limited fire danger today as a cold front moves through Oklahoma offering a slight chance of freezing drizzle and some mixed precipitation although forecast amounts will have no benefit with regard to longer term fire danger. The frontal boundary entering the Panhandle and northwest Oklahoma this morning will gradually move through the state bringing a cold weekend in its wake.

Relative humidity values in the 24-29% range in far southwestern Oklahoma today as temperatures warm into the mid-60°’s will drive fine fuel moisture briefly to 5% in some locations. Light winds will limit fire spread potential and good moisture recovery into the evening will provide for initial attack success. Temperatures in the 60°’s are expected south and east of the I-44 corridor with relative humidity values generally 33-39% holding fine fuel moisture values to 7-8%. Low to moderate rates of fire spread are predicted with southerly winds 7-13 mph.

Given the weekend forecast, significant fire activity is not expected. Cold temperatures, sky cover and respectable relative humidity values on Saturday should limit the potential for new fire occurrence. Sunday’s forecast currently indicates light north winds are likely with only limited fire spread potential anticipated.
