Financial Assistance for Forestry Practices

Time is running out for landowners interested in financial assistance for forest conservation practices through the NRCS' Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). Tuesday, February 1 is the deadline to apply for funding in one of the Forestry Local Emphasis Areas that cover eight counties in southeastern Oklahoma. Counties included are Atoka, Choctaw, Haskell, Latimer, LeFlore, McCurtain, Pittsburg and Pushmataha.

“A successful partnership between Oklahoma Forestry Services (OFS) and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is already helping improve the health and productivity of the region's forestlands,” said State Forester George Geissler.

Private landowners can obtain technical forestry assistance and a Forest Stewardship Plan from OFS, and may be eligible for EQIP funds from NRCS to help them implement those plans. Through EQIP, landowners may be reimbursed up to 75% of the cost of site preparation, tree planting, chemical release spraying and other forest improvement activities.

Landowners interested in participating in this unique EQIP opportunity may apply at their local NRCS Field Service Center, and are also encouraged to visit or contact their local OFS forester in Broken Bow 580-584-3351or Wilburton 918-465-2082.
